About After the Scam
I started this blog because I lived it.
When my mom got scammed, I did what most adult children do: I panicked, Googled frantically, and found a whole lot of nothing helpful.
Corporate websites told me to "educate seniors about financial literacy."
Government sites gave me reporting forms but no actual guidance on what to do right now.
What I found online wasn't useless; it just wasn't actionable for someone in the middle of a crisis.
It was written for professionals or for reporting after the damage was done. I needed immediate steps I could take, scripts for difficult conversations, and prevention strategies that actually work.
I needed the steps that needed to be taken right now.
What do I do in the next hour? How do I talk to her about this without making it worse? Can we get any of the money back? How do I prevent this from happening again without infantilizing her?
So I figured it out the hard way. And then I realized how many other adult children were going through the same thing with zero real support.
My Approach:
I don't talk down to scam victims.
These schemes are sophisticated, run by professionals, and designed to exploit normal human psychology.
Your parent isn't stupid. They're human.
I also don't sugarcoat the hard parts.
The role reversal is painful. The guilt is crushing. The sibling conflicts are real.
Pretending otherwise doesn't help anyone.

What I give you is practical, actionable information in plain language. No corporate speak. No condescension. Just real talk for people dealing with real crises.
Because aging parent issues don't stay in neat categories, and neither should the resources that help you deal with them.

HEY, I’M JULIA…
My background is in elder care and dementia, so I thought I knew what I was doing. Then my mom got scammed and I realized how different it is when it's your parent.
This blog brings together professional knowledge and personal experience, the clinical understanding of why scams work plus the messy reality of actually dealing with it in your own family.
